Initially, I only watched the first three episodes out of curiosity, but as the story progressed, I found the anime increasingly engaging, completely exceeding expectations.
The plot advances in stages, building up layer by layer
The entire anime's plot can be divided into two main phases:
Phase One: Establishing a Foothold and Confronting Traitors
At the beginning of the story, the Demon King struggles to establish a foothold in a cyberpunk-style otherworld and gradually eliminates internal traitors. This phase features a tight narrative pace and begins to reveal character depth, especially with the introduction of the white-haired heroine. As the Demon King's loyal follower, her gentle yet resilient personality makes her an indispensable role. The furnace scene is particularly breathtaking, and the Demon King's timely appearance echoes the earlier moment when he took in the white-haired girl, creating intense emotional tension that brings tears to one's eyes.
Phase Two: Treasure Hunt Adventure in Akihabara
The second phase of the plot shifts to Akihabara, revolving around the search for three treasures to unlock the underground vault. Although this part is relatively short, the content is compact and multi-layered, with overt and covert storylines advancing in parallel. The tsundere performance of the blonde character and her hidden inner story are impressive—her transition from initial wariness to later openness toward the Demon King (really super fun!) is a well-executed character arc. Although the production quality of "Demon King 2099" is not top-tier, with some character details and action scenes appearing slightly rough, and occasional signs of limited budget in the animation, considering that the production company JC Staff was working on multiple anime simultaneously—even delaying their flagship work "DanMachi"—the completion level of this work is quite commendable. The reasonable plot, highly creative setting, and the distinct, well-rounded personalities of each character fully compensate for the production shortcomings.
