He watches the interaction between Yuu Amami and Umi Asanagi, who had just finished self-introductions completely contrasting his own, viewing it as a world he has no connection to. Having spent the first semester without making a single friend, Maki visits a video rental store one day and is handed a real self-introduction card by Umi, who is rumored to be the "second cutest girl in the class." Written on it are her true hobbies, such as watching B-movies—a hobby she shares with Maki.

Maki, who was secretly watching the situation along with Yuu and Nina, somehow exchanges contact information with Yuu when they part ways. One day after school, Maki and Umi go out to town as promised and are having a fun time, when Maki runs into Yuu and Nina, who were hanging out with another group while Umi was away. Maki tries to act normal so that their secret relationship won't be exposed, and Yuu invites him to hang out with them, but... Maki refuses in a strong tone and leaves the scene.
