Kids on the Slope

Kids on the Slope is a TV anime adapted from the manga by Yuki Kodama, blending drama, music, romance, and slice-of-life storytelling into a heartfelt coming-of-age journey. Follow transfer student Kaoru Nishimi and free-spirited Sentarou Kawabuchi as their shared love of jazz forges an unlikely friendship, intertwined with the warmth of Ritsuko Mukae and the bittersweet emotions of youth. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe with series composition by Yuko Kakihara, and produced by Tezuka Productions, this series delivers a beautifully crafted portrait of adolescence set to the soul of jazz.

The story unfolds in the early summer of 1966, set in a seaside town in Kyushu where the air carries a faint trace of American culture. Kaoru Nishimi, a first-year high school student, is uprooted from his life in Yokosuka due to his father's work circumstances and sent to live with relatives in an unfamiliar town. Reserved by nature and always at the top of his class, Kaoru has never quite found his place among peers. That begins to shift when he crosses paths with Sentarou Kawabuchi, his class's infamous troublemaker with a free-spirited attitude toward life. Through this unlikely connection, Kaoru is introduced to the world of jazz and experiences something he has never known before — genuine friendship. Rounding out the cast is Ritsuko Mukae, Sentarou's warm-hearted childhood friend and daughter of a record shop owner; the enigmatic upperclassman Yurika Fukahori; and the widely respected Junichi Katsuragi. Together, their intertwining lives form a coming-of-age story woven with music, youth, and human connection.
