Land of the Lustrous

Land of the Lustrous is a TV anime from studio Orange, adapted from the manga by Ichikawa Haruko. Set in a distant future, the series follows gem-beings who battle mysterious lunar invaders threatening their fragile world. Among them, Phosphophyllite—the youngest and most brittle of all—embarks on a journey that slowly unravels the haunting secrets underlying their existence. Blending action, psychological drama, and fantasy, the series is helmed by director Kyogoku Takahiko with series composition by Fudeyasu Kazuyuki. Orange's groundbreaking full-CG animation breathes life into every crystalline character, creating a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience unlike anything else in anime.

Set in a distant future reshaped by six catastrophic meteor strikes, Houseki no Kuni takes place in a world where crystalline beings known as Gems live and fight for survival. These ageless, genderless beings are each given specific roles to defend themselves against the Lunarians — mysterious attackers from the moon who seek to harvest Gem bodies as ornamental trophies. Among them is Phosphophyllite, one of the youngest and most fragile Gems, who longs to contribute to the ongoing battle against the Lunarians. Due to their brittle nature, however, Phos is instead tasked with compiling a natural history encyclopedia — a far cry from the frontlines. During this reluctant endeavor, Phos crosses paths with Cinnabar, a highly capable Gem who lives in self-imposed isolation, banished to nightly patrols of a remote shore due to the toxic substance their body involuntarily emits. Moved by Cinnabar's solitude, Phos begins to wonder if there might be a place in this world for both of them.
