Sword Art Online: Phantom Bullet takes place roughly one year after the infamous SAO incident. Within Gun Gale Online (GGO), a VRMMO set in a gritty world of firearms and steel, a chilling rumor has begun to spread among players: an enigmatic figure wielding a jet-black gun is allegedly capable of killing players not just inside the game, but in the real world as well. This mysterious series of events, dubbed the "Death Gun" case, catches the attention of government officials. Seijirou Kikuoka, an agent from the VR Division of Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, turns to Kazuto Kirigaya for help, asking him to go undercover inside GGO to investigate. Though skeptical that a virtual weapon could cause real-world harm, Kazuto dives into the unfamiliar shooter world under a new identity. Struggling to find leads on his own, he crosses paths with Shino Asada, a skilled female sniper who wields the massive Hecate II rifle. Together, they set their sights on the grand gunfighting tournament known as the Bullet of Bullets.
