The Twisted Love of Domination and Subjugation: An In-Depth Analysis of Denji and Makima in "Chainsaw Man," A Predestined Tragedy
In "Chainsaw Man," a work filled with bloodshed and black humor, no relationship is more fascinating, perplexing, and chilling than the interactions between the protagonist Denji and Makima. This relationship is the core driving force of the first part, "Public Safety Arc." It is both the salvation of Denji's miserable life and the trap that pushes him into a deeper abyss. Is this love, or absolute control? Through these characters, Tatsuki Fujimoto shows us an extremely twisted yet incredibly pure form of emotion.

First Encounter: Salvation or a Deeper Cage?
At the beginning of the story, Denji was betrayed by the yakuza and left on the verge of death. In his most desperate moment, Makima, dressed in a public safety uniform, appeared like a holy mother, extending a helping hand to him. She gave Denji unprecedented treatment: a warm embrace, food, and a "home." For a boy who considered basic sustenance a luxury and had never experienced care, Makima was undoubtedly a goddess who saved him from hell.
However, this "salvation" came with a price from the very beginning. Makima's condition was for Denji to become her "dog," choosing either obedience or being eliminated as a demon. Denji accepted without hesitation because, for him at that time, having stable food and shelter was a dream life. The establishment of this master-servant relationship sowed the seeds for all the tragedies to come.
The Art of Control: Makima's Carrot and Stick
Makima's manipulation of Denji was an art form. She was well aware of Denji's intense longing for an "ordinary life" and "maternal affection." In the Japanese naming, if you remove the middle "キ (ki)" from Makima's name (マキマ), it becomes "ママ (Mama)," meaning "Mom," hinting at the mother-like role she played for Denji.
She would sometimes give rewards, such as promising dates or intimate physical contact, making Denji devoted to her; other times, she would use cold words and actions to make him understand that all his possessions could be taken away at any moment. On one hand, she brought Denji companions like Aki Hayakawa and Power, giving him his first taste of family warmth; on the other hand, she was the very one who personally destroyed it all. The purpose of all this was to completely crush Denji's independent will and make him submit entirely.
The True Face of Love: The Control Devil's Confession
As the plot progressed, the layers of mystery surrounding Makima were peeled back, revealing her true identity—the "Control Devil." She is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the ability to dominate those she subjectively considers inferior to herself. She made a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan, allowing her to transfer all damage she receives to random Japanese citizens, making her nearly impossible to kill.
Makima confessed to Denji that she was never interested in "Denji" the person himself. What truly fascinated her was the Chainsaw Devil Pochita inside Denji and his legendary ability to "devour demons and completely erase their names from the world." Her ultimate goal was to use Chainsaw Man's power to eliminate negative concepts like death and war, creating an "equal" world under her control. Denji's affection for her, and everything he held dear, were merely tools for her grand ambition.
Ultimate Rebellion and Unity: Denji's Answer Given Through "Love"
After learning the whole truth and witnessing the tragic deaths of his comrades caused by Makima, Denji finally understood that Makima had never seen him as an independent individual. In the final battle, Denji used this to his advantage. He saw through the fact that Makima could only recognize "Chainsaw Man" by scent, not "Denji" himself.
He gave his answer not with hatred, but in an extremely twisted form of "love." He dismembered the defeated Makima, cooked her into dishes like ginger pork, and ate her. The logic behind this act was: since Makima wanted to become a part of Chainsaw Man, he would grant her wish in the most direct way, making the two "become one." This was not an attack, but an "ingestion" of love, thereby bypassing her contract that transferred attacks. By completely absorbing Makima into his own body, Denji took on her sins and, in a true sense, dominated the "Control Devil."
Conclusion: A Symbiosis of Love and Curse
The relationship between Denji and Makima was a deception from start to finish, yet it was also interwoven with Denji's one-sided, genuine, and pure emotions. Makima gave him a new life, but she also took everything from him. Denji's final rebellion was both an escape from control and a final confession about this twisted relationship.
At the end of the story, Nayuta, the newborn Control Devil with no memories, is entrusted to Denji's care. This cyclical relationship offers a new possibility: Denji, who was once controlled, now becomes the guardian of the Control Devil. He might have the chance to guide Nayuta to understand Pochita's true wish—to build an equal relationship. This tragedy that began with control and ended in devouring ultimately continues in a hopeful form.
