The Twisted Love of Domination and Subjugation: An In-Depth Analysis of Denji and Makima in "Chainsaw Man," A Predestined Tragedy
In "Chainsaw Man," a work filled with bloodshed and black humor, no relationship is more fascinating, perplexing, and chilling than the interactions between the protagonist Denji and Makima. This relationship is the core driving force of the first part, "Public Safety Arc." It is both the salvation of Denji's miserable life and the trap that pushes him into a deeper abyss. Is this love, or absolute control? Through these characters, Tatsuki Fujimoto shows us an extremely twisted yet incredibly pure form of emotion.

First Encounter: Salvation or a Deeper Cage?
At the beginning of the story, Denji was betrayed by the yakuza and left on the verge of death. In his most desperate moment, Makima, dressed in a public safety uniform, appeared like a holy mother, extending a helping hand to him. She gave Denji unprecedented treatment: a warm embrace, food, and a "home." For a boy who considered basic sustenance a luxury and had never experienced care, Makima was undoubtedly a goddess who saved him from hell.
However, this "salvation" came with a price from the very beginning. Makima's condition was for Denji to become her "dog," choosing either obedience or being eliminated as a demon. Denji accepted without hesitation because, for him at that time, having stable food and shelter was a dream life. The establishment of this master-servant relationship sowed the seeds for all the tragedies to come.
The Art of Control: Makima's Carrot and Stick
Makima's manipulation of Denji was an art form. She was well aware of Denji's intense longing for an "ordinary life" and "maternal affection." In the Japanese naming, if you remove the middle "キ (ki)" from Makima's name (マキマ), it becomes "ママ (Mama)," meaning "Mom," hinting at the mother-like role she played for Denji.
She would sometimes give rewards, such as promising dates or intimate physical contact, making Denji devoted to her; other times, she would use cold words and actions to make him understand that all his possessions could be taken away at any moment. On one hand, she brought Denji companions like Aki Hayakawa and Power, giving him his first taste of family warmth; on the other hand, she was the very one who personally destroyed it all. The purpose of all this was to completely crush Denji's independent will and make him submit entirely.
The True Face of Love: The Control Devil's Confession
As the plot progressed, the layers of mystery surrounding Makima were peeled back, revealing her true identity—the "Control Devil." She is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with the ability to dominate those she subjectively considers inferior to herself. She made a contract with the Prime Minister of Japan, allowing her to transfer all damage she receives to random Japanese citizens, making her nearly impossible to kill.
