《Jobless Reincarnation》 Rudy and Sara: A Bitter Romance That Deepens Trauma and the Truth About Impotence
In the long and winding life of Mushoku Tensei's protagonist, Rudeus Greyrat, many women had a profound impact on him. Among them, the story of the adventurer Sara, though brief, was a heavy and crucial mark during the lowest point of Rudeus's life. Their relationship, and that doomed romance, not only revealed Rudeus's deepest trauma but also set the stage for his true healing later on.

Meeting in the Abyss of Despair: 'Quagmire' and 'Counter Arrow'
The story takes place after Rudeus was left without a word by Eris. Misinterpreting Eris's note, he believed he had been abandoned, sinking into deep self-doubt and depression, even leading to psychogenic impotence (ED). To search for his missing mother, he took the alias 'Quagmire' and wandered alone in the northern lands.
It was at this time that he met the B-rank adventurer party 'Counter Arrow,' led by the archer Sara. Initially, Rudeus only teamed up with them temporarily to earn travel expenses. However, with his overwhelming magical prowess, he repeatedly saved the party in critical moments, gradually earning his teammates' respect and making the young archer Sara develop admiration for this powerful and mysterious mage.
A Brief Romance: A Doomed Relationship
During their days of adventuring together, Sara's vivacity and straightforwardness gave the pain-immersed Rudeus a long-lost sense of warmth. He began trying to open his heart, and Sara actively pursued him. For Rudeus at that time, Sara's presence seemed like a lifeline; he longed to use a new relationship to forget the pain of being abandoned by Eris and to prove that he was not a 'useless man.'
After a successful mission, the team celebrated at a tavern, and the atmosphere was just right. Fueled by alcohol and emotion, the two decided to spend the night together. What should have been a moment to elevate their relationship became the beginning of a complete rupture.
The Night of Heartbreak: The Truth of Impotence and the Breakup
That night, Rudeus discovered that his psychogenic impotence, caused by Eris's departure, had still not healed. No matter how hard he tried, his body would not respond to any woman other than the one he deeply loved.
For Sara, who did not understand the context, this scene was undoubtedly a great humiliation. She could not comprehend Rudeus's psychological trauma, feeling only that she had been rejected and her feelings toyed with. Her self-esteem was severely wounded, and in her anger and disappointment, she furiously rebuked Rudeus and stormed out. The next day, other team members mocked Rudeus over the incident, completely shattering the already fragile relationship. Rudeus was abandoned once again, and in a manner that further wounded his male pride, compounding his existing trauma and causing him to completely abandon any thought of seeking solace in the northern lands.
The Meaning of Trauma and the Reunion of Reconciliation
The experience with Sara was an indispensable part of Rudeus's character development. It brutally revealed that trauma cannot be easily covered by another relationship. This failure made him realize that he could not be responsible for anyone until he truly healed his heart. This also made his later reunion with his childhood friend Sylphiette (Fitts) more meaningful—only Sylphiette's selfless, profound love and gentleness truly melted the ice in his heart, redeeming him both physically and psychologically.
Years later, Rudeus unexpectedly reunites with Sara in the Milis Holy Kingdom. By then, Sara was already married and had become more mature. She apologized to Rudeus for her past lack of understanding and impulsiveness, and Rudeus had long since let it go. This brief reconciliation drew a plain yet gentle conclusion to that bitter past, proving that both had ultimately moved toward their own growth and happiness.
