Bernard serves as a Catholic abbot navigating the turbulent era of the Hundred Years' War, projecting an outward image of piety and gentleness while concealing a coldly calculating political mind beneath. Viewing Maria as a dangerous threat to both Church authority and established social order, he employs every tool of manipulation and ecclesiastical power at his disposal to neutralize her influence and safeguard the interests of the Church and French forces. Yet in the story's later chapters, when pressed by Maria's unflinching questions, the foundations of his long-held faith begin to fracture, triggering a radical awakening that forces him to confront the true nature of the relationship between God and humanity.
