Hazuki is the story's main heroine, a resident of the so-called "other side"—a world inhabited by ordinary people with no connection to magic whatsoever. She lost her birth mother at a young age, and after her researcher father remarried, she transferred from a rural town to a high school in Tokyo. With her father currently stationed abroad alone, she now lives together with her stepmother Saeko and stepsister Misa.
No matter the circumstances, Hazuki has an ingrained habit of slipping into fantasy and daydreams—a trait she traces back to something her late mother often told her: "Find your own story." She internalized those words in her own way, and has since relied on imagination to soften the edges of difficult or painful situations. When even that is not enough to cope, she retreats further into the world of books, using fiction as a refuge from reality—a tendency she has named her own "Story Syndrome."
One day, she spotted a girl named Shizuka on the street, followed her out of curiosity, and found herself wandering into the Kuzunoha Girls' Magic Academy. There, a student named Takagami revealed that Hazuki had unwittingly formed a contract with the original text of Cinderella, making her a Mädchen. Driven by her longing for something beyond the ordinary—and by her earnest wish to become friends with Shizuka—she enrolled in the academy as a provisional transfer student, later formalizing her transfer in the second volume of the novel adaptation.
As someone from the "other side," she starts out as a complete novice with no knowledge of magic. Yet in a twist that defies all expectation, she proves unable to perform Buch Hülle—the most basic spell any Mädchen learns first—while simultaneously and unintentionally summoning a massive quantity of pumpkins and imbuing them with a will of their own, feats that qualify as advanced magic. This has led Shizuka to declare her nothing short of an "anomaly."
