Two millennia ago in ancient China, Jie Mei was born into a family of master swordsmiths. When the malevolent great demon known as the White-Faced One threatened humanity, she made the ultimate choice — casting herself into a blazing furnace as a living sacrifice to forge the sacred weapon Jūmō. Her brother Yilong, too, merged his essence into the spear's shaft, their bond immortalized in steel and spirit. Though her mortal life ended in those flames, Jie Mei endured as a guardian spirit, watching over every bearer of Jūmō across the ages. Her sacrifice also ignited a sacred bloodline of shrine maidens called the Responsible Ones, tasked with sealing the White-Faced One for generations. Today, she serves as an ethereal guide, offering Ushio Aotsuki the wisdom and strength needed to confront his destined battle.
