Minori Koudai

Minori Koudai is the older sister of protagonist Makio and the biological mother of the girl Tomo. She passes away alongside her husband in a traffic accident at the very start of the story, and her presence is conveyed primarily through the memories of other characters. Minori and Makio stand at opposite ends of the personality spectrum—Minori placed paramount importance on social norms and public perception, spending her life in pursuit of an outwardly ordinary and proper existence. Her attitude toward Makio in life was controlling and harsh, and the clash of values between the two sisters continues to cast a long shadow over Makio and Tomo's shared life even after Minori's death.
