In the flashback arc of Re:Zero's second season, Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti reveals a past that defies all expectations. Once known as 'Juice,' he led the Witch Cult's moderate faction with calm reason and genuine compassion, forging heartfelt bonds with Emilia and her foster mother as they stood together to protect their beloved forest. Driven by desperation to shield those he cherished, he forcibly absorbed a witch's gene—only to be manipulated by the Witch of Vainglory into committing the unthinkable: slaying the very person he swore to protect. Unable to endure the weight of that irreversible act, his mind shattered completely, giving rise to the unhinged, expression-contorting Archbishop of Sloth the world would come to fear.
