Hidden Backbone
Ranta holds the official rank of Volunteer Soldier and follows the path of the Dark Knight. Despite his small stature, he carries an outsized presence — and not always in a welcome way. He is brazenly self-indulgent, utterly blind to the mood of any room, and seemingly incapable of letting an argument die on its own. He shamelessly peeps at girls bathing and harasses Shihoru without a hint of remorse, earning Yume's blunt verdict that he is "exactly the type women despise." His teammates largely learn to tune him out, since engaging with him only drains energy. He and Yume are in a perpetual state of bickering, with Ranta never missing a chance to mock her flat chest. Yet this insufferable attitude conveniently evaporates the instant he faces someone stronger — he abandons his pride with breathtaking speed and falls into obedience, a flip so swift it borders on impressive. In combat, he insists on shouting the name of every technique before executing it, a habit Haruhiro repeatedly scolds as telegraphing moves and wasting precious time, though Ranta shows no sign of ever stopping.
Though Ranta is well aware of the friction his personality introduces into the group, he genuinely believes his role as the villain of the team actually strengthens their unity. Even when confronted directly by Haruhiro as the party leader, he refuses to tone himself down, confident that those who truly understand him will recognize his worth — and as it turns out, he is not entirely wrong. He is a force that keeps the party moving forward.
He initially volunteered to be a Warrior, only to abruptly change his mind and enlist as a Dark Knight — a class with no option to transfer — throwing the team into difficulty from the very start. Ironically, the agility-focused nature of the Dark Knight suits him far better than the physique-dependent Warrior path ever would have, and his personality aligns with the class's reckless style in a way that feels almost fated. He recklessly burns through skills and eagerly pursues finishing blows to accumulate Vice. His cultivated demon is named Zodiac.
As the story progresses, Ranta's capabilities grow steadily. He can take down an enemy on his own, and the high mobility of the Dark Knight allows him to kite opponents and dash to allies' aid, meaningfully lightening the burden on the overall front line. His finest hour comes at the Cyrene Mines, where he voluntarily stays behind alone to cover the party's retreat — surrounded by an army led by Death Spots with no apparent way out — and miraculously escapes. Badly wounded and fighting alone, he holds on until the party recovers and returns for him, and they all make it out safely.
