Rin has a petite build often compared to that of an elementary schooler, with deep grayish-blue hair reaching her waist—occasionally tied up into a large, fluffy bun—and calm, violet eyes. At Motosu High School, she serves as a library committee member, rarely seen without a book in hand whether on campus or at a campsite; she even works part-time at a bookstore, keeping her world closely tied to the written word. Though her expression seldom changes, her inner life is surprisingly vivid, and she maintains a near-constant internal commentary on the people and situations around her.
Rin began solo camping as early as her first year of middle school, building a wealth of outdoor expertise over time. She has a deep appreciation for the stillness of winter camping, preferring off-season sites where crowds are few. When she happened upon a lost and distressed Kagamihara Nadeshiko at the story's outset, their chance meeting gradually led to occasional joint outings—and nudged Rin toward trying her hand at camp cooking beyond instant noodles. She later earned her motorcycle license and acquired a pearl-blue YAMAHA Vino Deluxe, which she rides on solo cross-prefecture excursions whenever time allows.
Most of her camping gear was handed down from her grandfather, including her tent, a mont-bell Moonlight Tent 3. Although Ōgaki Chiaki affectionately dubs her "Sesame Rin," and both Chiaki and Nadeshiko have repeatedly invited her to join the Outdoor Activities Club, Rin has consistently declined, citing her discomfort with club social dynamics. Even so, after sharing several camping trips with Nadeshiko—including a Christmas camp—she seems to have quietly begun warming up to the idea of group camping. Her family name, Shima, is inspired by Shima City in Mie Prefecture.
