When the new school year begins, he is filled with dread after realizing his assigned seat is directly in front of Akira Nikaido, a gloomy classmate surrounded by ominous rumors and avoided by everyone. Despite his initial apprehension, Medaka's inherent good nature shines through when they are forced to interact, such as being paired up for bathroom cleaning duties. Rather than shunning Nikaido like the rest of the school, Medaka bravely strikes up conversations with him. Upon discovering that Nikaido used to be completely different during middle school, Medaka's fear turns into genuine intrigue. He goes out of his way to include Nikaido in social activities, even proactively adding him to his group for the Okinawa school trip.
