Rumiko Takahashi's New Work "MAO": A Fantasy Time-Travel Tale
The legendary Rumiko Takahashi, creator of countless classic works that everyone knows, has another series being adapted into an anime this season! It is her latest serialized work, "MAO".
This is Takahashi's sixth series serialized in "Weekly Shonen Sunday". This time, she not only returns to a serious fantasy shonen route but also incorporates suspense elements rarely seen in her past works. Having already surpassed one million copies in sales, it can be said that her blade remains as sharp as ever.
The setting of "MAO" spans two eras: the modern day and the Taisho era. The story follows high school girl Nanoka Kiba, who lost her parents in a ground-collapse accident when she was a child. She herself was seriously injured and only remembers a burning street and a mysterious monster.
One day, when she revisits the scene of the accident, she finds herself transported to the Taisho era. Not only is she unable to make contact with passersby, but she is also attacked by a monster. At this moment, an onmyoji named Mao, who happens to be passing by, saves her life. He notices that, like him, she possesses cursed blood that is toxic to monsters, and Mao even points out that she might not be human. The culprit behind the cursed constitution shared by the two may be an entity Mao calls the "Cat Demon"...
