Set in the fictional Japanese city of Kamaya in 2016, this story follows Matoi Sumeragi, a second-year junior high school student working part-time as a shrine maiden at the local Tenman Shrine. Having been raised by her paternal grandparents after an early separation from her mother, Matoi has only recently started living with her father Shingo, a police detective. More than anything, she longs for an ordinary, uneventful life. Alongside her is Yuma Kusanagi, her close friend and fellow part-time shrine maiden, who comes from a long line of priests with a hereditary duty to perform exorcisms and purify evil spirits. One day, the two girls arrive at the shrine to find its grounds in disarray and chaos unfolding around them. From that moment on, Matoi's quiet wish for a normal life begins to feel increasingly out of reach, as she finds herself drawn into a world of the supernatural that she never anticipated.
