Tenjin is the supreme head of the Tenman divine group, venerated across countless shrines throughout Japan as the god of academia, thunder, and plum blossoms. In appearance, he takes the form of a dignified elderly man, ever accompanied by a host of shrine maiden-clad divine instruments whose clan name is "Yu." Upon his grand entrance, he recites the waka poem of Sugawara no Michizane: "Should the east wind blow, let the plum blossoms fill the court in bloom — even without a master, forget not the coming of spring." During the frantic examination season, he enlists Yato's assistance to manage the overwhelming flood of prayers and wishes. Though the two often butt heads, Tenjin is not above accepting Yato's requests or offering sound counsel to Hiyori Iki when needed. When Hiyori was taken captive by Kugaha, Tenjin struck a solemn pact — he would transport both Hiyori and Yukine to Takamagahara on the condition that once she was rescued from Bishamonten's domain, the divine ties binding her to the gods must be severed, returning her fully to her mortal life. Ordinarily a gentle and warm-hearted old deity, Tenjin harbors a deeply fearsome side: as one of Japan's infamous "Three Great Vengeful Spirits," any mention of that title — or words such as "stray dog" or "demotion" — is enough to unleash his thunderous and terrifying divine wrath upon those foolish enough to speak them.
