October New Anime 'I'm an Assassin but I'm Obviously Stronger than the Hero' has an interesting retro art style
Recently caught up on this October new anime, so I'd like to share my thoughts.
"I'm an Assassin but I'm Obviously Stronger than the Hero" (暗殺者である俺のステータスが勇者よりも明らかに強いのだが) is a light novel series by Matsuri Akai, which began serialization on "Shōsetsuka ni Narō" in 2017 and received an anime adaptation in October 2025.
**Plot Summary**
The protagonist, Akira Oda, is summoned to another world along with his classmates. While everyone else receives cheat abilities, he is only granted the mundane "Assassin" job. The catch is—his stats actually far surpass those of the "Hero," who is supposed to be the strongest.
Skeptical of the King's motives, Akira decides to hide his true strength, only to be framed for a crime he didn't commit and hunted down. He escapes into the depths of a labyrinth, where he encounters the elf girl Emilia and begins his true path as an "Assassin."
**Production Staff**
- Animation Production: SUNRISE
- Voice Cast: Takeo Otsuka, Saku Mizuno, Sanae Kobayashi, Yukari Tamura, Junichi Suwabe
- Genre: Fantasy, Action, Isekai
**Personal Thoughts**
The art style of this show is quite unique; it has a retro feel, unlike the polished, moe-style aesthetics that are mainstream today. As for the plot, it follows the classic "misunderstood → escape → get stronger" trope, but the protagonist's personality is relatively calm and rational, avoiding the pitfalls of being blindly altruistic or overly hot-blooded.
The white-haired elf heroine, Emilia, is definitely cute, though the romantic development seems slow so far; the focus remains primarily on the battles and adventure.
Is anyone else watching this? What do you think of the art style?
