The best anime since 2018? I only agree with half of this list
Just saw someone discussing the best anime since 2018, and I couldn't help but chime in.
Honestly, quite a few good works have come out since the pandemic, but not many are truly memorable. Anime that leave a lasting impression on you after finishing are becoming increasingly rare.
Among the masterpieces listed by the OP, I personally think Violet Evergarden is absolutely god-tier. Kyoto Animation's visuals are beyond reproach; every single frame could be a wallpaper. Violet's character arc is also written so well—her journey from not understanding love to gradually grasping what emotions are is a level of nuanced writing you rarely see nowadays.
Odd Taxi as well—the script is just too strong. That feeling when all the multi-threaded narratives converge at the end gives me goosebumps. Summer Ghost, while a short film, builds such a tasteful atmosphere.
As for Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, they are certainly popular, but to be honest, I think they are overhyped. It's not that they aren't good, but are they really "masterpiece" level?
I do agree with the OP on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners; Trigger's style paired with that script was truly impactful. I felt depressed for days after finishing it.
What other underrated gems do you guys think have come out since 2018? Feel free to recommend some; I'm currently in a bit of an anime drought.
