Antidote recommendations: Laid-Back Camp, Natsume's Book of Friends, and Nichijou. These are the perfect antidotes for depressing series.
All of Inio Asano's works have this quality. The Flowers of Evil and Downfall are similar depressing experiences.
It took me a whole week to recover after watching it. I immediately went to watch Laid-Back Camp afterward as an antidote.
The OST for this (if it ever gets an anime adaptation) would definitely be super heavy. But even in manga form, it's already impactful enough.
As someone who finishes everything I start: this is one of the few works that didn't make me immediately jump into the next one. I need time to digest it.
I finished reading it all in one go at a manga cafe, and I just sat there for a long time after finishing before I could get up. I felt completely hollowed out.
Oyasumi Punpun is a work that requires mental preparation before reading. Going in without any prior knowledge is the most important thing.
Definitely don't watch this while taking the MTR. You won't be able to control your facial expressions in public.
