Social difficulties for anime fans—how to find like-minded people?

Since moving to a new area, I haven't met a single anime fan around me. I want to find like-minded people but don't know how to go about it.

Methods I've tried:
- Joining Discord groups (great online, but I want real-life friends)
- Going to anime conventions (only happens a few times a year)
- Browsing at Sino Centre (but I'm too shy to strike up a conversation)

How do you all meet anime fan friends in your area? Any recommended social activities or groups?

My approach is to go sit at that anime cafe in Sham Shui Po mentioned above. If you go often enough, you'll naturally start chatting with the other regulars.

Someone above suggested organizing a book club, and this is a great opportunity! Structured activities make it much easier to make friends than just striking up random conversations.

This forum itself is a community! Everyone exchanging ideas here can already be considered friends. It would be even better to find an opportunity to organize an offline meetup.

My experience is to join regular activities. For example, model workshops, manga book clubs, etc. It's easier to break the ice when there's a shared activity.

As a 4-koma manga fan: I found fellow enthusiasts on Twitter by using tags for the works. Social media is especially useful for people with niche interests.

I have this problem too! After moving to a new area, it's really hard to find like-minded people. In the end, I discovered that my colleague sitting next to me was an anime fan when I started my job!

Cosplay events are great places to meet fellow enthusiasts! Even if you don't cosplay, you can still meet a lot of people by attending as a photographer or spectator.

Live concerts for anime soundtracks are also great opportunities to meet fellow fans. I met a few good friends at an anime song concert in Hong Kong last time.
