Children of the Whales is a TV anime adaptation of the manga by Abi Umeda, blending adventure, drama, fantasy, mystery, romance, and sci-fi into a hauntingly poetic world. Set aboard a massive island called the Mud Whale drifting across an endless sea of sand, the story follows Chakuro as a fateful encounter with the mysterious Lykos sets an epic journey into motion. Adrift upon a boundless ocean of sand, the Mud Whale is a floating island home to a close-knit community living in near-total isolation from the rest of the world. Most of its residents possess a mysterious power known as saimia — an ability that grants extraordinary gifts but carries a devastating price, cutting short the lives of those who wield it. Among them is Chakuro, a 14-year-old boy who serves as the island's archivist, carefully documenting the lives and history of his people. Though the Mud Whale has drifted past other islands over the years, its inhabitants have never once encountered another human being from the outside world — until now. When Chakuro sets foot on a distant island comparable in size to his own home, he crosses paths with a mysterious girl whose presence will set his fate on an entirely new course.
