Introduction / Synopsis

Summary

A Lull in the Sea is an original TV anime produced by P.A.WORKS, blending fantasy, romance, and slice-of-life elements into a breathtaking coming-of-age story set between the ocean and the surface world. Follow Hikari Sakishima, Manaka Mukaido, Chisaki Hiradaira, and Kaname Isaki as their world is forever changed by an encounter with the surface-dweller Tsumugu Kihara, setting off a tide of emotion, longing, and transformation. Directed by Toshiya Shinohara and crafted by acclaimed series composer Mari Okada—renowned for her emotionally layered storytelling—this series delivers stunning visuals and deeply resonant human drama. A must-watch for fans of heartfelt fantasy romance.

Plot

In this world, human civilization has flourished beneath the ocean since ancient times. Yet as generations passed, a portion of humanity chose to abandon the sea and build new lives on land, giving rise to a deep cultural divide that persists to this day. The story centers on four 14-year-old students from the underwater village of Shioshishio—Hikari Sakishima, Manaka Mukaido, Kaname Isaki, and Chisaki Hiradaira—who have grown up surrounded by the ocean's embrace. When their school is forced to shut its doors, the four friends must venture to the surface and enroll at Mihama Middle School, stepping into a world that feels both foreign and overwhelming. As they navigate the tensions between sea and land dwellers, they also find themselves confronting unfamiliar emotions stirring within their hearts—feelings that signal the quiet end of childhood and the uncertain beginning of something new.
