Sparks of Tomorrow

Sparks of Tomorrow is a drama anime blending historical atmosphere, slice-of-life sensibility, and a shoujo-oriented perspective, produced by Kyoto Animation. Based on the novel by Hiro Yuuki, the series is directed by Minoru Oota with series composition by Tatsuhiko Urahata, featuring Inako Momokawa and Kihachi Sakamoto at its heart. Set in the summer of 1907, Sparks of Tomorrow transports viewers to the Fushimi district of Kyoto during the waning years of the Meiji era. Inako Momokawa, a 15-year-old girl born into a sake-brewing family, struggles with a life where nothing seems to go her way. Scolded daily by her father Jinemon Momokawa, she finds her only solace in heartfelt prayers at the local shrine. Everything changes when she crosses paths with Kihachi Sakamoto, a spirited and unconventional young man she encounters at Fushimi Inari. Unlike Inako, Kihachi places no faith in the gods—instead, he speaks boldly of a future powered by electricity. As Inako's world grows increasingly constrained by circumstances beyond her control, she and Kihachi set out together on an unlikely journey across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures, searching for a mysterious lost book known as the "Electricity Catalog"—a peculiar volume said to hold predictions about the coming age of electric power.
