How to store 500+ manga at home? Seeking advice from the experts

I only realized while moving house that I have over 500 manga volumes... The room in my new place is much smaller, and there's absolutely no space for them.

Current options I'm considering:
1. Buy bookshelves (but I'm out of wall space)
2. Use storage bins under the bed (worried about humidity/dampness)
3. Rent a mini-storage unit ($500-800/month)
4. Sell a portion of them (I can't bear to do it)
5. Switch to digital versions (but I've already bought the physical copies...)

Does anyone have experience storing over 500 books? Please share your solutions!

Manga maniac says: I have 800 volumes, and I've used Billy bookcases (IKEA) stacked up to the ceiling. Vertical space is key.

Never sell out-of-print manga! Even if you don't have space for them right now, you must find a way to preserve them. You will regret it in the future.

There are shops in Sham Shui Po that specialize in selling bookshelves. Custom-made bookshelves based on your measurements are the most space-efficient.

I've already stored a portion of them at a manga cafe😂 You just need to work out an arrangement with the owner. It's not the most official method, but it works.

From a financial perspective: A storage unit costs $500-800 per month. That's $6,000-9,600 a year. If you buy a bookshelf, it's a one-time cost of $2,000. A bookshelf is more cost-effective.

Mini-storage units in the New Territories are cheaper than those in the city. If there's one nearby, $500/month is enough for a small unit.

For self-storage units, pay attention to temperature and humidity control. If manga gets damp, it's beyond saving. I suggest adding moisture absorbers.

Suggestion: Categorize by work and secure with bookends. Place the ones you read most often at eye level, and the less frequently read ones on higher or lower shelves.

For under-bed storage, using a dehumidifier (desiccant) plus a sealed storage bin is fine. That's how I store a portion of my manga.

If you won't read the manga again after speed-reading it, you could consider selling it to a second-hand shop or giving it away. It helps reduce the size of your library.
