Set against the backdrop of a world undergoing rapid industrialization, a terrifying threat has emerged — creatures known as Kabane. These undead monsters are nearly impossible to destroy, as their hearts are shielded by an impenetrable iron casing that must be pierced to bring them down. Worse still, a single bite from a Kabane is enough to turn any human into one of these relentless predators. On the far eastern island of Hinomoto, survivors have retreated behind fortified stations, relying on steam-powered locomotives called Hayajiro to maintain connections between settlements. Among the residents of Aragane Station is Ikoma, a young engineer who spends his days working on Hayajiro while secretly developing a specialized weapon he calls Tsuranukizutsu, driven by a burning desire to fight back against the Kabane threat. His quiet determination takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with a mysterious girl named Mumei, who carries herself with a confidence that sets her apart from everyone else in the station.
