Netflix announces $1 billion investment in original anime, what do you think?

Netflix announced at today's press conference that it will invest over $1 billion in producing original anime over the next three years. The plan includes collaborating with multiple Japanese animation studios to create Netflix-exclusive anime works.

As an observer of the animation industry, this news is a double-edged sword. Netflix's funding could improve the treatment of animators, but the exclusivity model does indeed affect accessibility for viewers. Furthermore, Netflix prefers to release entire seasons at once, which doesn't align with the culture of watching shows weekly.

1 billion over three years isn't actually that much... compared to Netflix's annual total content budget. But if it's concentrated on 10-15 high-quality productions, the results will be better than making 50 mediocre ones.

If Netflix is going to have more animation, the quality of their subtitle translations needs to keep up. Netflix's Traditional Chinese subtitles often have errors... I hope a portion of the investment will be used for translation quality.

"Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" proves that if Netflix is willing to give Japanese teams creative freedom, they can produce great work. But the problem is they don't always let go like that... many Netflix anime show traces of script interference.
