A few surprising gems worth watching in April🥂
The quality of the new April anime is quite good. Let me share a few that I've finished recently and found surprising:
1. 《Nihon Sangokushi》
A combination of political intrigue and abstract humor. The style is very unique—a mix of Chinese classical flavor, American comic book hero vibes, and Japanese Ukiyo-e, creating a very rugged and exaggerated aesthetic. The protagonist is well-developed, the narrative is excellent, and the pacing is smooth. Although it's called "Sangokushi" (Three Kingdoms), it doesn't feel like the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" we are familiar with. Definitely worth a try.
2. 《Atelier of Witch Hat》
Another eye-opening magic story after "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End." The male lead has a "familiar aura" about him, and the animation quality is extremely high—they really know how to draw! It mainly follows the female lead growing up with a group of children learning magic. Definitely something to look forward to.
3. 《Yomi no Tsugai》
A work by Hiromu Arakawa and Studio Bones; the visuals and character style continue the teacher's signature flavor. It features shonen hot-blooded battles combined with the bond between siblings. The setting and battle scenes are both quite good.
4. 《Akane-banashi》
Based on the traditional Japanese art of "Rakugo," which is somewhat similar to Hong Kong's stand-up comedy. It's a niche subject, but don't miss it. The female lead's journey of growth as she fights for her father's beliefs is very inspiring.
Which ones have you watched? Any other April anime recommendations?
